  • PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Carroll Gordon was the Project Landscape Architect responsible for site and athletic field design from initial concept to construction documents and RFI’s during construction.  This was one of the first new high schools to be completed with full funding by NJSCC.  It is a 10+ acre site, with half of the site an athletic stadium.  Full-sized football, soccer, baseball, and soccer fields are overlain in a compact 400-ft by 450-ft area, including a bleacher building that houses locker rooms and a food vendor space.  The fields are surrounded by a recreational track that is open to the public, with special reduced sports lighting.

Because of the anticipated heavy use of the fields, the surface of the fields is artificial turf with sand and rubber infill over a stone drainage system.  Stormwater detention for the entire 10 acre site is in pipes under the athletic fields.  Specialized details and specifications were required in order to cap the subsurface contaminated soil.

Carroll designed the entire site, including an entrance plaza which serves as a community resource and a place to view performances that take place in the music room, utilizing sliding doors to open out to the plaza.  Also included are tennis courts, a parking lot, and student gathering spaces.

Carroll worked closely with the building architects, placing as much site lighting as possible on the building.  She also worked closely with the environmental and structural engineers to coordinate the sports field lighting design.
