  • PROJECT DESCRIPTION

As a subconsultant, KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided topographic surveying and mapping and structural engineering services for this project to provide a Long Island Rail Road connection to Grand Central Terminal (GCT) via the 63rd Street Tunnel linking Manhattan and Queens.

KSE provided civil/structural engineering services for station elements (such as stairways) within the LIRR Concourse at GCT. The firm was responsible, for structural engineering and design of new and modified structures for the entrances to the proposed Long Island Rail Road concourse and from the concourse to the street level. Entrances typically comprise two or three escalators and one or two stairways. This work requires that numerous columns, beams, and girders be designed and replaced or reinforced in the existing building structure or under existing viaducts carrying roadways in the vicinity of Grand Central Terminal.

In the areas of topographic surveying and mapping, KSE was responsible for supplemental surveying in the vicinity of GCT and at Arch Street and Sunnyside Yard in Queens. In the GCT area, surveying/mapping was performed at 245 Park Avenue, at 347 Madison Avenue, and at the Roosevelt Hotel to support design of the new Long Island Rail Road Concourse. Surveys included track-level areas, basements, utilities, and street-level areas, as well as reflected ceiling plans.
